Comedian and "blaxploitation" film actor Rudy Ray Moore (a.k.a. "Dolemite") is one of the most influential and controversial comedians of our time. As of of the early "blue" comedians, he paved the way for the likes of Richard Pryor. Unlike his contemporaries (Redd Foxx, et al) he was not afraid to use street language... a rather dubious distinction, but without this breakthrough Eddie Murphy and Chris Rock wouldn't be employed! His early works were so controversial that stores refused to stock them on the shelves. Rudy's records were stored behind the counter in a brown wrapper; you had to know the clerk to get a copy! Despite this, many of his albums went on to reach the Billboard Top 25, and became instant classics."
The iconic Moore, who is known as “Dolemite” and “The Godfather of Rap, ” has appeared in several of his own feature films, and has served as an inspiration to a slew of hip-hop and rap artists, including the late Eazy-E, Ice-T and Snoop Dogg (who enlisted Moore as guest in his 1994 music video for “Doggy Dogg World”). Snoop has stated, “Without Rudy Ray Moore, there would be no Snoop Dogg. And that’s for real.”
