J.C. Spires
Hauntingly beautiful, emotionally resonant music from this versatile singer/songwriter!
True to his Detroit roots, J.C. Spires began his musical odyssey playing the blues. One night he made a musical connection that would forever alter his path. At the age of 19, J.C. Spires met legendary bluesman John Lee Hooker after playing on-stage with his own band. Spires made such a good impression, Hooker asked him to join him on stage with his electric bass. The two immediately "connected", and Spires ended-up touring with Hooker for two years.
Of his experience with John Lee Hooker, he recounts, "We smoked together. As soon as we started playing, the whole gig turned around for the better."
But J.C.'s musical journey didn't end with the blues. After years of experimentation with various styles, he arrived at his own sound -- a sexy, classy yet modern take on pop/rock.
"I went through a lot of styles before I found out that this was for me," he says. "I played rock, punk, country and soul before I found my place."
Indeed, his sound is now all his own. He and his band use their performance mantra of "spare, dramatic, and understated" to deliver the message of the music. With J.C.'s smokey, rich voice, the result is a soulful, evocative mix of styles on his upcoming debut that brings the listener through the rollercoaster ride of a love relationship.
For J.C. Spires, his connection to the music is a truly personal one. "For me, the essence is to go deeper, and to find something deeper in myself and bring that out," he says.
At times earthy, at times ethereal... always deep.
"There's something in this world that differentiates one person from the crowd or makes someone stand out from all the rest that I call The Magic. J.C. Spires has The Magic." Dorothea Bradley KPPC TV Pasadena, CA
